Global Summit on Energy Security Future Holds in London, April 24-25

By Abdullahi Lukman

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has confirmed that over 60 governments, including ministers and senior officials, will gather in London for the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, set to take place on April 24 and 25, 2025.

Co-hosted by the UK government, the event aims to address a wide array of pressing energy challenges facing nations worldwide, from access and affordability to reliability and climate change.

The summit will bring together key players from diverse sectors of the energy industry, including oil, gas, renewables, electricity, nuclear, and critical minerals, as well as representatives from international organizations and civil society.

In total, around 120 high-level invitees are expected to attend, with many more involved in a series of associated events and technical workshops in the lead-up to the main summit.

One of the key highlights of the Summit will be the presence of UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, and IEA Executive Director, Fatih Birol, who will co-host the event and deliver keynote speeches on energy security in a rapidly changing global landscape.

The Summit is to focus on a holistic approach to energy security, examining how countries can address both traditional and emerging risks in a fast-evolving energy environment.

This is to include discussions on the shifting geopolitical, technological, and economic factors that influence energy security at both national and international levels.

Key issues up for discussion include changes in global energy demand and supply, the growing role of clean energy technologies, the availability of critical minerals for clean energy systems, and the resilience of energy systems against extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change.

In addition, the Summit is to explore the expanding role of electricity in modern energy systems, the ongoing challenges of energy access and affordability, and the technological innovations, including artificial intelligence, that are shaping the future of energy security.

The preparatory sessions scheduled for April 23, 2025, is to allow government representatives, industry experts, and academics to delve deeper into specific topics, such as critical minerals, gas security, gender considerations in energy policy, methane emissions, and the state of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

These discussions are to feed directly into the broader Summit agenda, helping to shape the global response to the many complex issues surrounding energy security.

The IEA, with 50 years of experience in managing global energy security, is at the heart of this initiative, supporting countries in mitigating energy disruptions and managing crises.

As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, the Summit is expected to provide an opportunity for world leaders to come together to review the latest trends shaping energy security and discuss the tools necessary to navigate the challenges ahead.

In the face of rising global energy demands, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, the London Summit represents a critical step towards building a more secure, sustainable, and resilient energy future for countries around the world.
