Global conflict hits aviation, tourism and agriculture, key economic sectors

By Faridat Salifu

The ongoing war in the Middle East is deepening economic disruption across several major sectors worldwide particularly aviation, tourism and agriculture as rising costs, disrupted transport routes and shaken investor confidence ripple far beyond front lines.

Aviation has been severely affected as airspace closures and safety concerns force flights onto longer, costlier routes, driving up ticket prices and reducing passenger volumes.

Major Middle Eastern hubs that previously handled a large share of global air traffic have seen operations scaled back, creating knock‑on effects in international connectivity and airline revenues.

The tourism industry, built on travellers’ confidence in peace and security, has suffered sharp declines in arrivals and spending as war‑related risk perceptions grow. Travel advisories and media coverage of conflict zones deter visitors, hitting hotels, tour operators and local economies that depend heavily on international tourism receipts.

Agriculture is also feeling the impact of the conflict through supply chain disruptions that raise input costs, constrain access to fertilisers and other essentials, and disrupt planting or harvesting in affected regions. Conflict zones often see farmland damaged and rural labour displaced, undermining food production and food security in already vulnerable areas.

Economists warn that these sectoral shocks could slow global growth, increase inflationary pressures, and trigger longer‑term structural challenges if hostilities persist, especially in countries heavily dependent on these industries for employment and foreign exchange.
