GCF to review $1bn climate action offer to developing countries

By Faridat Salifu

The board of Green Climate Fund (GCF) is set to review 17 new climate project proposals worth approximately $1 billion during its 39th meeting from July 15 to 18, in Songdo, Incheon, Republic of Korea.

These proposals aim to address adaptation and mitigation needs across developing nations, spanning Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean, Asia, and the Horn of Africa.

The projects encompass sectors such as coastal resilience, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and climate technologies.

In addition to project proposals, the Board will consider accrediting six organizations, including four Direct Access Entities, to serve as GCF project implementing partners.

Other agenda items include updates on GCF’s regional presence, partnerships, access strategy, financing of results-based payments for REDD+, and the complementarity and coherence action plan.

During the meet, reports from the Secretariat and independent units, as well as the 13th report to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will also be presented.

The meeting is expected to draw around 400 participants, including observers from civil society, private sector organizations, National Designated Authorities (NDAs), Accredited Entities, and other partners engaged in delivering climate finance to developing countries.
