Food Security: FG Constructs 7 New Dams, Establishes 21 Irrigation Sites in Southwest

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Government has embarked on the construction of seven new dams and establishing at least 21 irrigation sites across the six states of the Southwest to strengthen agriculture and food security.

The Managing Director of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (O-ORBDA), Adedeji Ashiru, disclosed this while receiving newly appointed Executive Directors at the O-ORBDA headquarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He congratulated the new appointees and assured them of a collaborative working relationship aimed at fulfilling the organisation’s mandate.

Speaking on behalf of the newly appointed directors, Ayobami Oyalowo, Executive Director for Finance and Administration, pledged to work closely with Ashiru and the board to tackle hunger and enhance food sufficiency, aligning with President Tinubu’s vision.

“As a financial expert with 25 years of experience, including in a similar organisation, I will ensure accountability and probity in project funding and execution,” Oyalowo said. “If Nigerians are properly fed, issues of insecurity and criminality will significantly decline.”

He promised to prioritize staff welfare and called for cooperation from his department, while also committing to timely and efficient financial processes including budgetary allocations, payments, and financial reporting.

Oyalowo emphasized the importance of open communication, teamwork, and a conducive work environment in boosting productivity and innovation within the Authority.

He expressed optimism that the new leadership team would drive O-ORBDA’s mission to empower farmers, combat hunger, and achieve national food sufficiency.
