Food security: Expert urges timely credit disbursement to farmers

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Executive Director of the Nigeria Stock Product Research Institute, Lateef Sanni, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the timely release of credit facilities to farmers, emphasizing its critical role in addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges.

Speaking at the Green Agric West Africa Expo (GAWA) 2025 in Lagos, Sanni also stressed the importance of encouraging youth participation in agriculture, stating that access to credit is essential for their success.

Sanni’s call came as Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, reiterated the government’s commitment to long-term solutions for food insecurity.

Kyari, represented by Omolara Abimbola-Oguntuyi, the Ministry’s Lagos State coordinator, outlined the government’s strategy, which includes investing in commercial agriculture, modern technologies like irrigated agriculture, and green technology.

The minister said while current palliative measures provide short-term relief, sustainable solutions are necessary to address the growing gap between population growth and food supply.

He highlighted agriculture as the backbone of West Africa’s economies and emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable farming methods, protecting biodiversity, and fostering private sector involvement in the agricultural sector.

The government also pledged to facilitate networking opportunities for agricultural businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs.
