Flood Threats Mount in P/Harcourt as Refuse Dumps Litter City

The Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Rivers State, Dr. Edward Banigo, has warned of flooding within the Port Harcourt City if the dumping of refuse into drainages remained unchecked.

This comes as the NOA director also called for the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation exercise in the state, to raise peoples’ consciousness about their environment.

Banigo gave the warning following the gradual return of heaps of refuse along median of roads within Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital city.

The NOA boss,who made the submissions during a radio program monitored in Port Harcourt on Thursday, lamented that Port Harcourt which was once regarded as a Garden City, is presently the dirtiest among cities in the south East and South South regions of the country.

Banigo decried the habit of dumping refuse into existing drains by some residents of Port Harcourt, and warned that Rivers State which is located within the rain belt, will experience serious flooding if deliberate efforts were not taken by relevant authorities to clear blocked drainages.

He also emphasised that residents of Port Harcourt have crucial roles to play in ensuring a clean environment and urged the state Sole Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, to take decisive action to clean up the city, including the prosecution of those caught violating the state environmental laws and regulations.

Banigo assured that NOA will always partner the state government to sensitise the people on the need to keep their environment clean.
