Widespread flooding is expected to hit 15 states across Nigeria between 24 and 28 September 2025, following a forecast of heavy rainfall, according to a flood alert issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
The warning, released by the Ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Centre on Wednesday, identified 69 high-risk locations across the affected states.
The alert, signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, forms part of ongoing efforts to prevent further loss of life and property during the peak rainy season.
States at high risk include Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara. Communities such as Jimeta, Yenagoa, Asaba, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, and Gusau are among those likely to experience flooding.
Flooding continues to be one of Nigeria’s most destructive recurring disasters.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), as of 20 September 2025, floods have killed at least 232 people, displaced 121,224, and affected over 339,000 nationwide. A total of 681 individuals have sustained various injuries.
The Ministry urged state governments, local authorities, and disaster response agencies to mobilize resources, activate early warning systems, and implement mitigation strategies to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Residents in flood-prone areas are also advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures.
