Flood: Kwara Assembly task government on collaboration with NEMA, HYPADEC

The Kwara House of Assembly has called on the state government to collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in providing relief materials to flood victims in the state.

This followed a Motion on Notice, titled “Need to Avert Effects of Flood in Communities Along River Niger in Kwara State”, sponsored by the lawmaker representing Patigi Constituency, Mr Rufai Adam, at Tuesday’s plenary.

Adam described Patigi constituency as one of the major rice producers in Nigeria affected by flood that must not be neglected.

He said communities around the river bank areas in Patigi Local Government Area have lost enormous farm produce and other valuables amounting to millions of Naira to flood.

Mr Felix Awodiji (Irepodun Constituency), in his contribution, said apart from the provision of relief materials, the state government should continue the dredging of the rivers to allow free flow of water in order to mitigate flooding.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr Raphael Adetiba (Oke-Ero constituency) urged people residing in river banks to vacate the areas to safer locations to guard against loss of lives, destruction of farmland and property.

Reading the resolutions of the House, Speaker Yakubu Salihu urged the state government to assist flood victims through synergy with Hydroelectric Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPADEC) to minimise the effects of flood.

In another development, the Auditor General’s Report on the Accounts of the State Government for 2021 was submitted and the speaker referred it to the House Committee on Public Accounts for further legislative action.
