By Faridat Salifu

In a commendable effort to address the aftermath of the 2022/23 flood in Borno State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated the implementation of the Federal Government’s Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI).

This intervention is set to benefit 15,000 vulnerable households, as announced by the Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Habib, during a press briefing in Maiduguri, the state capital, recently.

NEMA revealed that a total of 660,884 households were identified and verified nationwide to receive this intervention, designed to promote sustainable socio-economic resilience among the most vulnerable individuals.

The verification process was a collaborative effort involving State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), State Agricultural Development Projects, and other stakeholders to ensure the accurate identification of beneficiaries.

Each household is slated to receive a comprehensive aid package, including food and non-food items, as well as agricultural inputs and livelihood support, such as grinding and sewing machines. This holistic approach aims to contribute to the recovery and empowerment of the affected households.

Mr. Sirajo Abdullahi, the North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, urged beneficiaries to utilize the aid for their recovery process and emphasized the importance of not selling the provided items.

Various stakeholders, including the Secretary of Borno State Emergency Management Agency and the Chairmen of Hawul, Maiduguri Metropolitan, and Chibok, commended the involvement of local governments in the distribution exercise.

They expressed gratitude for the intervention and underscored the crucial role of local government participation in ensuring the efficient delivery of aid to rural areas.

Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its support. The Governor emphasized the significance of the aid in empowering affected households and facilitating their recovery.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to facilitating successful interventions aimed at improving the livelihoods of citizens in the state. This intervention stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to providing crucial support to those in need.
