Fg, World Bank Collaborate to Harness Nigerias’ Blue Economy

The World Bank has expressed interest in partnering with Nigeria on sustainable fisheries and an integrated blue economy.
World Bank delegation, led by Ms. Lia Sieghart stated this during a courtesy visit to the office of the Minister of Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola .
During the visit, Sieghart praised Nigerian government’s commitment to advancing the blue economy.
She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the ministry, describing it as a strong indication of the government’s dedication to the sector’s growth.
Ms. Sieghart highlighted the World Bank’s interest in collaborating with Nigeria on blue economy noting that the meeting aimed to explore areas where the bank could offer expertise and knowledge.
In response, Minister Oyetola expressed his appreciation for the World Bank’s visit and outlined the ministry’s priorities, particularly the development of Nigeria’s fishery and aquaculture industries.
He noted that the fishery sector is a flagship focus for the ministry and emphasized the importance of regulating fishing activities through designated terminals and sustainable practices.
“We are working to create a sustainable fishery programme that is attractive to the youth. Our goal is to reduce importation and increase local production,” Oyetola said.
He welcomed the World Bank’s support in achieving these objectives and advancing the ministry’s vision.
The meeting was also attended by key officials, including Oloruntola Olufemi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Babatunde Bombata, Director of Maritime Safety and Security; and Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, the minister’s technical aide.
