The Federal Government has called on women farmers in Nigeria’s South-East region to adopt sack farming and home gardening to boost food production and improve food security.

Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, made the call on Wednesday during a sensitisation workshop in Enugu.

The event targeted small-scale women farmers and individuals with special needs across the region.

Ogunbiyi, represented by Chief Nkannebe Ugochukwu, Zonal Director of the ministry in Enugu, explained that these farming techniques are space-efficient and suitable for both rural and urban environments.

He emphasised their potential to transform food production and reduce hunger at the household level.

“By adopting these practices, you will not only improve your household food security, but also contribute to Nigeria’s food sufficiency,” he said.

He also recognised the central role women play in agriculture and the importance of inclusive initiatives for people with disabilities.

The programme forms part of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), under the Women Support Programmes (WASP) and her “Every Woman a Garden” project.

Mr. Victor Ngwu, Permanent Secretary, Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture, commended the federal ministry for choosing Enugu for the event, urging participants to take the training seriously as agriculture remains a priority in the state.

Participants from Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, and Ebonyi states expressed appreciation, describing the training as an eye-opener.

One participant, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ogbuonya from Imo, said she planned to implement what she learned by cultivating her backyard.

Another, Mrs. Nwanoma Nnenna from Abia, noted that the skills gained would help her enhance her productivity.

The workshop ended with the distribution of starter packs to women farmers and people with special needs.
