“Federal Government and Kano State Collaborate for Water and Food Security”

The federal government is urging collaboration with the Kano State government to improve water supply and enhance food security nationwide. This initiative will involve the creation of more dams, water supply, irrigation, and hydropower projects.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlulum Utsev, made the appeal during his visit to the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) in Kano. He emphasized the Ministry’s eagerness to work with state governments to expand irrigable lands, boost agricultural production, improve water supply, and ensure food security.
He also outlined his vision for reinforcing River Basin Development Authorities through capacity building and increased funding to achieve President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Food Security Agenda.
The Minister highlighted the Kano Irrigation Project, a joint effort of HJRBDA and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, which has developed significant agricultural lands for irrigation.
The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government in addressing water sector challenges in the state and welcomed the Water and Sanitation Minister’s appointment.
During his visit, the Minister inaugurated the Engineering Design Office of the Hadeija-Ja’amare River Basin Authority and inspected the Chalawa bottled water plant, as well as the Information and Debriefing center projects set to be commissioned soon at the River Basin’s headquarters.
