FG Reaffirms Commitment to Achieving Food Security

By Faridat Salifu

In line with the Federal Government’s steadfast dedication to ensuring food security in Nigeria, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has reiterated the nation’s commitment, emphasizing the pivotal role of Katsina State in advancing President Bola Tinubu’s food security agenda through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

He retraited this during a courtesy visit by Gov. Dikko Radda recently, in Abuja.

Kyari highlighted the government’s overarching goals of eradicating food insecurity, reducing poverty, and generating employment opportunities.

He further stated that the ministry’s target of cultivating 500,000 hectares of arable land to bolster food security and stressed the importance of collaborating with states and local governments to compile authentic lists of farmers.

In response, Gov. Radda shared insights regarding the reduction of insecurity in Katsina State, attributing the progress to a 70% decrease in challenges affecting food production and the safety of citizens and property.

He underscored the necessity of addressing security concerns, emphasizing the impact of criminal activities on farmers’ access to their fields.

Furthermore, Gov. Radda expressed plans to revitalize the livestock industry in Katsina, outlining initiatives such as the establishment of a comprehensive livestock center, encompassing aspects from pasture development to meat processing and exportation, with a focus on collaborating with relevant partners to facilitate significant investments.

As Katsina stands out as a key producer of maize, Gov. Radda urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to prioritize the state’s maize production, similar to the emphasis placed on wheat production in Jigawa.

This strategic approach aims to fortify agricultural production and reinforce Nigeria’s food security landscape.
