FG Pushes $3bn Agge Deep Seaport to Unlock Niger Delta’s Maritime Economy

By Faridat Salifu

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to the swift completion of the $3 billion Agge Deep Seaport project in Bayelsa State, describing it as a strategic pillar of Nigeria’s emerging blue economy and a game-changer for the Niger Delta.

Speaking in Yenagoa over the weekend, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, said the seaport will serve as a new maritime gateway for the South-South region, unlocking international trade opportunities, easing congestion in other ports, and accelerating regional development.

Oyetola made the statement during the launch of a marine safety campaign, which included the distribution of 3,500 life jackets to inland waterway users across Bayelsa.

He emphasized that the Agge port aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery agenda and the broader marine and blue economy strategy designed to attract local and foreign investments, boost job creation, and diversify the economy.

The minister noted that his ministry was working closely with relevant stakeholders to fast-track the project, pledging that the port would also open opportunities in logistics, ship-building, fisheries, and coastal tourism.

Oyetola praised Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri for aligning with the federal government’s maritime vision and for showing leadership in port development planning.

On marine safety, the minister said the life jacket initiative targets 12 riverine states in its first phase and is part of the national safety response to the high rate of boat mishaps across Nigeria’s waterways.

He explained that the move is about saving lives and giving rural transport users, fishermen, and traders the essential tools to survive, adding that no Nigerian should die simply because they had to cross a river.

In a strong appeal, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, called on the federal government to move beyond pledges and deliver fully on the Agge port promise.

He said the project, when completed, would not only transform Bayelsa but also open a vital economic corridor for the entire country, linking it more efficiently to global trade routes.

Diri pledged his administration’s full support for the seaport’s completion and called for increased collaboration among stakeholders, including development partners, to fast-track delivery.
