The Federal Government and Nestlé Nigeria have joined forces to revolutionize the country’s dairy industry by launching a comprehensive training programme aimed at boosting milk production and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
The partnership was officially announced on Monday during a ceremony marking World Milk Day 2025.
This initiative focuses on equipping farmers with practical skills in milk production, processing, hygiene, and farm management to tackle persistent challenges in Nigeria’s dairy value chain.
Central to the programme is the establishment of a Dairy Training Centre in Paikon Kore, Gwagwalada, designed to build mid-level technical expertise and promote modern dairy farming practices.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Livestock Development Mukhtar Maiha emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector under the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy. “Our collaboration with Nestlé will enhance productivity and create sustainable livelihoods for farmers,” he said.
Nestlé Nigeria’s CEO, Wassim Elhusseini, highlighted the company’s ongoing impact, noting that since 2019, its Dairy Development Project has trained over 2,000 milk producers, established 83 cooperatives, and helped aggregate more than 1 million liters of raw milk.
These efforts have driven down milk rejection rates and significantly increased farmers’ incomes.
Elhusseini also unveiled a Dairy Demonstration Farm that has successfully boosted milk yields from 1 liter to over 10 liters per cow per day.
Impressed by the results, the government has invited Nestlé to convert the farm into a formal training institute, further solidifying the partnership’s long-term vision for Nigeria’s dairy sector.
