FG launches two national policies for Nigeria’s energy transition

By Abdullahi Lukman
The National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and National Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP), unveiled, Thursday, February 27, were crafted to accelerate Nigeria’s energy transition and ensure a reliable power supply.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who said this this at the unveiling of the policies, described them as crucial documents that would guarantee sustainable power supply for the country.
He stated that the NIEP will provide an evidence-based framework for achieving universal electrification, aligned with the nation’s energy transition objectives.
The Minister emphasized that the accompanying Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) prioritizes cost-effective electrification and optimizes energy resource utilization.
Developed in collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the UK Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UKNIAF), these frameworks are designed to drive a data-driven transformation of the power sector, fostering economic growth and job creation by improving supply reliability for businesses and industries.
Adelabu highlighted significant milestones achieved in 2024, crediting President Bola Tinubu’s support for the development of the NIEP, the leveraging of over $1 billion in power sector investments, the commencement of full sector commercialization, and an increase in average power generation to approximately 5,300 Megawatts.
He also pointed to the vast opportunities within the sector, including addressing transmission and distribution gaps and integrating renewable energy sources.
Sally Woolhouse, Head of Economic Development at the UK FCDO, affirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting infrastructure development in Nigeria.
She emphasized the partnership’s focus on tech-driven, evidence-based, and sustainable energy planning, highlighting the event as a testament to the collaborative efforts of both nations in tackling Nigeria’s energy challenges.
The Minister also expressed gratitude to the UKNIAF and other development partners for their valuable contributions.
