FG Launches Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant in Yobe

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Government has inaugurated the first phase of a 400kW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.

The initiative, launched on Monday, aims to enhance healthcare delivery while promoting renewable energy across the country.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who was represented by Alhaji Mamuda Mamman, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, described the project as a significant step towards advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for energy reform.

Adelabu said that the project supports the administration’s vision to make energy access a right, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

“This solar power plant will ensure reliable and clean energy for critical operations at the hospital, including surgeries, equipment usage, and vaccine refrigeration,” said Adelabu.

He said the initiative aligns with the Electricity Act 2023, which focuses on renewable energy adoption and decentralized systems, as well as providing private sector incentives.

The Minister noted that the Damaturu project is part of a larger federal strategy to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels, address climate change, and generate employment through green technology.

Adelabu added that the project’s first phase of 400kW would eventually be scaled up to 1MW, with plans to replicate similar interventions across the country to power hospitals, schools, and other critical infrastructure.

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana, commended the federal government for the solar plant, stating that it would significantly improve service delivery and reduce operational costs at the hospital.

“This project supports our efforts to provide uninterrupted energy for modern equipment and services at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, which has grown from a 250-bed to a 750-bed facility,” said Buni.
