FG Extends Lifeline to Flood Victims in Ogun State
In a heartwarming display of support for the flood victims in Isheri, Ifo Local Government of Ogun State, the Federal Government is taking significant steps to provide relief and assistance.
During a recent visit by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, the government announced plans to offer relief packages to the flood victims, with a strong commitment to help affected businesses get back on their feet and create new job opportunities through the targeted Adire Scheme intervention.
Dr. Betta Edu, representing the Federal Government, arrived in Ogun State, where she was warmly received by the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Dapo Abiodun. Her visit was not just a show of solidarity but a tangible effort to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by the floods.
She discussed the various social safety net programs of the Renewed Hope agenda championed by President Bola Tinubu and explored ways in which the state could actively participate.
One significant development during the visit was the update of Ogun State’s social register, which contributes to the National Social Register. This update would enable beneficiaries in Ogun to start receiving conditional cash transfers, much like their counterparts in other states.
Dr. Betta Edu emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was deeply concerned about the flooding and its consequences in Ogun State and Lagos State.
Dr. Edu conveyed her mission succinctly, stating, “My mission is simple: I’m here to provide humanitarian support and a prompt response to those who have been affected by flooding.”
She emphasized the urgency of the situation, promising to visit the affected areas and take a firsthand look at the extent of the damage. Relief materials were brought along, ready to be distributed to those in need, while long-term plans were underway to rebuild their livelihoods.
Additionally, the Minister shared insights into the Ministry’s immediate intervention strategies for Ogun State, including support for market women and men.
This intervention was part of a broader initiative aimed at uplifting 50 million people out of poverty within the next 42 months.
Furthermore, specific programs tailored for Ogun State, such as the ADIRE scheme, were discussed.
This initiative sought to empower women and men to produce ADIRE textiles and connect them with international markets, thus contributing to poverty reduction.
The GEEP Program, which offered zero-interest rate loans to market traders and farmers, was also highlighted as part of the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in Ogun State.
The Minister assured the people of Ogun State that their warmth and hospitality would not go unnoticed, and the government was resolute in its promise to provide the necessary support during these challenging times.
Following their visit to Ogun State, the government team would proceed to Lagos to assess areas affected by the flood, extending their intervention and support to those in need.
This gesture of compassion and commitment to alleviating the plight of flood victims is a ray of hope for the affected communities.
