The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Environment has mobilised a team of experts to Borno State support to mitigate the impact of the recent devastating flood.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, announced on the deployment on Wednesday following a visit to Borno last week Friday, where he met with Governor Babagana Zulum and pledged federal support to mitigate the disaster’s impact.
The minister highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated response to address the environmental challenges caused by the flooding.
“It is imperative that we focus on the urgent need for a coordinated and comprehensive response to mitigate the resultant environmental challenges posed by the flood,” Lawal said during the visit.
The expert team includes representatives from several departments and projects under the ministry, including the Department of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, the Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project, among others.
The team will undertake water sampling and testing, identify sources of hazardous chemicals, and implement measures to prevent waterborne diseases. As part of this effort, 100 drums of chlorine have been sent to Borno to disinfect water sources and ensure safe drinking water.
In addition, 30,000 flyers will be distributed to educate the public on sanitation and hygiene practices, such as proper waste disposal and handwashing, aimed at reducing the spread of infections.
Beyond the immediate response, the ministry plans to collaborate with the Borno State Government on long-term flood mitigation strategies and early warning systems to prevent future disasters.
The minister also acknowledged the leadership of Governor Zulum, praising his swift response in mobilising resources and safeguarding affected communities.
The ministry is also exploring partnerships with international organisations to enhance Borno State’s capacity for disaster risk management and climate adaptation.
“Together, the Federal Government is keen to strengthen its resolve to build resilience against such environmental challenges in the future,” the minister concluded.
