FG Call for Urgent Participation To Combat Ecological challenges
The federal government of Nigeria is urging individuals to actively engage in mobilization and sensitization campaigns against ecological challenges such as drought, desertification, land degradation, and climate change in the country.
This call was made by Ibrahim Yusufu, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, during the inaugural launch of the Great Green Wall (GGW) Day Commemoration held at the State House on recently.
Yusufu emphasized the need for proactive measures and aggressive afforestation and reforestation activities at both national and sub-national levels to tackle these challenges.
He highlighted that the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) has directed participating member countries, including Nigeria, to observe a dedicated day to raise awareness about the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI).
The event marked Nigeria’s first celebration of GGW Day, which included tree planting activities in all eleven frontline states.
Yusufu informed the gathering that state governors, royal highnesses, and selected schools have been mobilized to actively participate in the commemorative tree planting exercise.
He reiterated the government’s strong commitment to pursuing the mandate of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, in line with the available resources, to meet the Nationally Determined Contribution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
