FG Approves Lafarge Roadcem for Road Construction

The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has officially approved the use of Lafarge Africa Plc’s Roadcem, a road cement brand, for road construction.

This environmentally friendly product offers enhanced strength and load-bearing capacity for highways, reducing pavement thickness and modifying the chemical and mineral structure of soil materials.

Given the high variability in soil quality across Nigeria, achieving uniformity through traditional excavation and compaction methods has been challenging.

However, Roadcem has proven its effectiveness on various projects, ensuring sub-base/base improvement, fewer road breakdowns, long-term durability, and cost savings.

Roadcem is produced through the inter-grinding of cement clinker with a controlled amount of limestone and chemical additives. This composition provides better volume stability by controlling swell and shrinkage, ensuring greater durability and long-term strength for the stabilized layer.

Engr Osita Ezedozie, the director of Highways, Materials, Geotechnics, and Quality Control at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, confirmed that after extensive tests, pilot studies, and evaluations, Roadcem has outperformed ordinary Portland Cement in soil (sharp sand) stabilization.

As a result, the Ministry has granted approval for the introduction and use of Roadcem in highway pavement sub-base course construction.
