The Federal Government has partnered with the Agricultural Farmers and Traders Development Association of Nigeria (AFTDAN) to improve the agricultural value chain, expand market access, and promote sustainable farming practices across the country.
The collaboration was unveiled during the official inauguration of AFTDAN’s Board of Trustees in Abuja last Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by Alhaji Wada Nas, described the association’s establishment as a welcome development that aligns with the government’s drive to achieve food security and economic stability.
Akume reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting organizations focused on uplifting farmers and traders, stating that the collaboration with AFTDAN would help tackle critical challenges in the agricultural sector.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, who also chairs the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), endorsed the partnership.
Represented by Dr. Akanbi Olubunmi, the governor said the formation of AFTDAN signaled a new chapter in the revival of Nigeria’s agriculture, which he described as the backbone of the nation’s economy.
“Agriculture feeds our nation, sustains our economy, and holds the key to our future prosperity,” he said.
AFTDAN National President, Mr. Elijah Nze, described the association as a non-governmental organization committed to supporting farmers and traders through advocacy, empowerment, and strategic partnerships.
He said the group was formed to collaborate with the government and stakeholders to implement impactful agricultural programs and policies.
Nze outlined several persistent challenges affecting Nigeria’s agricultural sector, including limited irrigation, land degradation, low mechanization, seasonal farming patterns, market inaccessibility, inadequate extension services, and pest and disease outbreaks.
He assured that AFTDAN is ready to deploy resources and expertise to address these issues and support national food security efforts.
Also speaking at the event, the Ona of Abaji, His Royal Majesty Dr. Adamu Yunusa—represented by Alhaji Umar Faruk, the Magayaki of Abaji—urged the government and stakeholders to prioritize rural agriculture, describing it as the most reliable means of employment and a vital component of national development.
With its focus on farmer advocacy, food production, and market access, AFTDAN aims to restore the dignity of Nigeria’s farmers and promote economic empowerment through sustainable agriculture.
The new partnership with the federal government is expected to drive innovation and inclusivity in the sector, while helping to reduce hunger and unemployment nationwide.
