FEMA Warns of Impending Strong Winds, Urges Caution, Preparedness

The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) had issued a warning regarding the upcoming arrival of strong winds in neighboring states near the Federal Capital Territory.

The alert follows a weather forecast conducted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

The warning came from FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, in a statement released on Wednesday, that the states to be directly affected by the imminent strong winds are Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna, which are in close proximity to the Federal Capital Territory.

In addition, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states are also expected to experience strong winds.

The forecast indicates a moderate risk of hazards due to the forceful winds, which may result in displacements of individuals and isolated damage to vulnerable structures.

“FEMA highlights that the next three days will bring very strong winds to states neighboring the Federal Capital Territory, such as Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna. Strong winds are also expected in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states. The forecast warns of potential moderate risk hazards caused by these strong winds,” the statement read.

FEMA is closely monitoring the situation, recognizing that climatic changes in certain states, particularly Nasarawa, could impact the Federal Capital Territory.

In response to the forecast, FEMA’s Director General, Dr Abbas Idriss, has placed the agency’s Search and Rescue teams on high alert.

He urges residents to exercise caution during heavy rainfall and advises against driving through waterlogged areas.

Idriss also appeals to the public to clear blocked drains and avoid constructing buildings near water channels.

Idriss assures residents of FEMA’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. In the event of emergencies, the agency encourages the use of the toll-free number 112.
