FEMA Warns Abuja Residents of Heavy Downpour on Sunday

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a warning to residents of Abuja in preparation for an upcoming heavy downpour on Sunday.

Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director-General of FEMA, in a statement signed by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Ms Nkechi Isa, in Abuja on Friday, revealed that the agency’s emergency response team has been placed on high alert in anticipation of the expected heavy to moderate rainfall.

This cautionary measure comes after the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) released a weather forecast indicating that the FCT and its neighboring states would be affected by the heavy to moderate rainfall on Sunday.

The forecast also mentioned the likelihood of moderate to heavy rains in various areas, including Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, and Taraba.

Alongside the heavy downpour, NiMET also warned of potential flash floods, riverine flooding, strong winds, soil erosion, thunder, and lightning.

These adverse weather conditions could lead to displacement of people, the outbreak of waterborne diseases, and damages to infrastructure.

To ensure a swift and effective emergency response, Dr. Idriss revealed that FEMA’s search and rescue team has been placed on high alert.

Additionally, he has instructed an update of the agency’s flood contingency plans to ensure maximum preparedness.

In light of the impending weather conditions, the Director-General appealed to residents to take the early warning seriously and to exercise caution during the rainfall.

He strongly advised against driving or wading through pools of water to avoid potential hazards.

Drains in the area should be cleared to prevent blockage and possible flooding. Furthermore, he urged people residing in water channels to consider relocating temporarily to ensure their safety.

For prompt assistance in emergencies, Dr. Idriss emphasized the importance of using the emergency toll-free number 112 to enable FEMA to respond promptly and efficiently.

By disseminating this crucial information and taking necessary precautions, FEMA aims to protect the residents of Abuja and minimize the potential impact of the heavy downpour and its associated hazards
