FEMA, UniAbuja to Collaborate on Flood Education, Community Engagement in FCT
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and University of Abuja recurring flooding in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has prompted the intervention of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Abuja.
Both organizations have agreed to collaborate on community engagement regarding weather education and the consequences of flooding.
Dr. Abbas Garba Idriss, the Director General of FEMA, disclosed this information during an interview with journalists in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Dr. Idriss emphasized that the sensitization exercise will cover the entire FCT and will focus on flood management, environmental issues, and community engagement.
He further revealed that the exercise will commence with a symposium on July 31, 2023, at the university’s auditorium.
Approximately one thousand participants, including students, lecturers, FEMA staff, traditional rulers, community members from all six Area Councils, FEMA vanguards, volunteers, and local divers, are expected to attend the symposium.
Dr. Idriss highlighted that the peak of the rainy season in the FCT falls within July, August, and September, making the collaboration timely and relevant.
He also mentioned that FEMA will continue organizing town hall meetings and engaging with the community and its leaders.
Furthermore, Dr. Idriss stated that the University of Abuja’s faculty of Geography, Environmental Science and Social Science, and Community Services will work in partnership with FEMA to sensitize FCT residents, particularly those in grassroots areas.
While expressing appreciation to FCT residents for adhering to early warnings, Dr. Idriss urged all residents to utilize the toll-free emergency number for prompt response in case of emergencies.
