FCTA Takes Decisive Action Against Illegal Operations of “Yar Kasuwa” Market in Gwarinpa

By Faridat Salifu

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has adopted a resolute stance against the illicit activities of the “Yar Kasuwa” market in Gwarinpa, Abuja.

During a recent gathering with stakeholders in Abuja, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control, disclosed the administration’s decision to demolish the market for its unlawful operations.

Addressing representatives of the traders’ union and other stakeholders, Galadima emphasized that the department had issued a quit notice to the traders, urging them to vacate the area by January 7.

The scheduled demolition of the market, situated along the Number 16 Road corridor in Gwarinpa, is set to commence on January 8.

Galadima elaborated on the background, stating that the FCT Administration had awarded a contract for the comprehensive development of the arterial road where the market is situated.

He revealed that discussions had been ongoing with the traders since September 2023; however, their persistent refusal to comply had resulted in delays in the project’s execution.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Galadima underscored the potential ramifications on project costs and timelines if the situation persisted.

He emphasized that the traders’ non-compliance could lead to escalated material costs and variations in contracts, which would run contrary to the Administration’s policies.

In light of these circumstances, it has become imperative for the traders occupying the Number 16 Road corridor to heed the notice and vacate the area by Wednesday, as the demolition is slated to commence on Thursday.

Galadima emphasized the necessity of this action, referencing previous claims by the traders regarding inadequate briefing.

This decisive action by the FCTA underscores its unwavering commitment to upholding legal and regulatory standards, thereby ensuring the seamless implementation of development projects and infrastructure enhancements in the region.
