FCTA begins procurement for new waste management contracts in satellite towns

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced procurement processes for awarding new contracts for waste collection, evacuation, and disposal in satellite towns.

This follows the expiration of previous contracts in April 2025.

Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), disclosed this during a waste evacuation exercise in Karu, Abuja Municipal Area Council.

He explained that since the contracts awarded in 2022 expired, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, ordered a temporary waste clearing operation to bridge the gap before new contracts are awarded.

Currently, waste evacuation is being managed directly by the STDD without any contractor, focusing on critical areas from Nyanya to Karshi, with plans to extend to other area councils.

Zulkiflu said the ministry aims to intervene where waste buildup poses the greatest challenge.

He also raised concerns about the existing waste collection points, highlighting their health risks due to overcrowding and lack of space.

The STDD plans to appeal to the FCT Minister for the possible removal or relocation of these points in collaboration with local councils to safeguard public health.
