FCT shops for Fund to Boost Agricultural Development

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration has applied to access the Natural Resources Development Fund (NRDF) to support key agricultural projects aimed at enhancing food production, improving rural livelihoods, and contributing to economic diversification in Abuja.

Leading the application process, Michael Ango, Acting Chairman of the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), presented the request to the Fiscal Efficiency and Budget Committee of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Representing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Ango outlined plans that include dam rehabilitation for irrigation, deployment of solar-powered farming systems, provision of modern agricultural equipment to smallholder farmers, improved storage facilities, and expanded market access.

“These initiatives are part of our broader strategy to strengthen food security and support the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Ango said, emphasizing that the projects would encourage sustainable agricultural practices and empower local communities.

Ango assured stakeholders that the funds, if approved, will be used transparently and effectively to deliver lasting impact. The proposal is currently under review by the RMAFC.

Ambassador Desmond Akawor, Chair of the RMAFC committee, said the NRDF—set at 1.68 percent of national revenue—is designed to fund projects that promote resource-based economic diversification.

He noted that the FCT’s request would go through a formal vetting process, including project presentations, site inspections, and final presidential approval. END
