FCT council to revive abandoned dam, boost irrigation farming

By Awyetu Asabe Hope

The Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali, said on Tuesday that the council will rehabilitate an abandoned dam and train youths in irrigation farming to strengthen food production and sustainability in the area.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with farmers’ associations in his office, Kwali said the dam, constructed years ago by a former member of the House of Representatives for Abuja South Federal Constituency, would be revived to support year-round farming.

He said the council was also making arrangements to procure equipment for youths who would participate in the irrigation farming programme.

According to him, herbicides, agrochemicals, sprayers, assorted seedlings and fertiliser will also be procured and distributed free to rural farmers across the area council.

Kwali added that the council was collaborating with the FCT Administration’s Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat to engage agricultural consultants to train beneficiaries in modern irrigation farming.

He noted that about 85 per cent of residents, particularly those in rural communities, are peasant farmers, making investment in agriculture a priority for the administration.
