Experts call for stricter enforcement of Nigeria’s environmental laws

By Abdullahi Lukman

Environmental experts at a webinar ahead of World Environment Day 2025 have called for stricter enforcement of Nigeria’s environmental laws to curb increasing violations and promote sustainable waste management.

The webinar, titled “From Pollution to Innovation: Aligning Policy, Enterprise and Community for Sustainable Waste Solutions in Nigeria,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss solutions for improving environmental outcomes.

Dr. Tunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), noted that while Lagos has strong environmental policies, enforcement remains weak, allowing violations to persist. He emphasized the need for tougher penalties to deter offenders.

Mrs. Olapeju Ibekwe, CEO of Sterling One Foundation, praised existing policies but stressed the importance of integrating circular economy principles and strengthening enforcement, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement frameworks.

Co-Founder of Climate Transition Ltd, Mr. Olumide Lala, advocated for incorporating waste management into Nigeria’s educational curriculum.

He also emphasized the need for households to sort waste at the source and called for full enforcement of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy across industries.

Mr. Obuesi Phillips of SWEEP Foundation recommended better alignment between policymakers and grassroots communities, while Dr. Osuji Otu urged stronger partnerships between government and the private sector in both policy development and implementation.

The session highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action to ensure Nigeria’s environmental policies lead to tangible and lasting improvements.
