Expert woos livestock keepers for FG’s free vaccination against rabies
Dr Ephraim Nwanga, a Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ebonyi, has advised livestock keepers to support Federal Government’s initiative to check the spread of rabies.
Nwanga, who is the Director, Veterinary Services Department in the ministry, gave the advice in an interview in Abakaliki yesterday.
He said that livestock vaccination was a Federal Government’s initiative designed to prevent rabies and other animal transboundary diseases.
He, therefore, urged dog, poultry and cattle owners in the state to take advantage of the initiative to vaccinate their animals against rabies.
Nwanga said that the Regional Disease Surveillance System Enhancement Project, in collaboration with the Federal Government, planned to eradicate rabies in the country.
He recalled that the Federal Government had given vaccines to states for free and continuous vaccination of animals to enhance a healthy society.
Nwanga said the programme became necessary, following the zoonotic effect of diseases spreading from animals to human beings.
He said that the vaccination of animals would be successful through the sensitisation of the public, especially those who keep domestic animals.
