Expert tasks govt on policy implementation to curb plastic pollution
An environmental expert and consultant, Mr Taiwo Adewole, on Monday, urged federal and state governments to implement policies to curb plastic pollution in the country.
Adewole gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He stressed the need for the government and producers of plastics to take responsibility by implementing and enforcing policies regarding plastic pollution in the country.
”There are so many policies regarding plastic pollution but implementation is one of the problems we are facing in the country.
”There is need for strict implementation of policies by the government,” he said.
He added that there was need for the government to carry out more enlightenment programmes to reduce the menace to the barest minimum.
”Lack of education is also a problem, because people are not well educated on the dangers of plastic pollution to the environment.
”The government needs to educate the populace more on the dangers through radio and television,” he also said.
He added that there was also need for enlightenment on turning plastics to wealth or turning waste to wealth.
According to him, people can make money from plastics by gathering them together and selling to those that will make use of them.
”Papers, plastics, metals and glasses are some of the most popular items that can be recycled,” he said.
