By Rashidat Oladele

Garden tools are essential equipment used for various gardening tasks such as digging, planting, pruning, and maintaining the garden. They include items like shovels, rakes, hoes, pruning shears, hedge trimmers, and more. These tools make gardening easier and more efficient, allowing you to take care of your plants and create a beautiful garden space.

Taking care of your garden tools is essential for their longevity and optimal performance.

Regular cleaning is crucial after each use, make sure to remove any dirt, debris, or plant material from your tools. A simple brush or hose can do the trick. This helps prevent the buildup of rust and keeps your tools in top shape.

Below are some ways to maintaining your garden/farming tools

Sharpen the blades of your tools. Sharp blades make gardening tasks easier and more efficient. You can use a sharpening tool to maintain the edges of your pruning shears, hedge trimmers, and other bladed tools. This ensures clean cuts and reduces strain on both you and your plants.

Lubrication: Apply a light coat of oil to metal parts to prevent rust and keep them moving smoothly. This is especially important for tools with hinges or moving parts.

Handle Maintenance: Inspect the handles of your tools for any signs of wear or damage. If needed, sand down rough spots and apply a protective finish to prevent splinters.

Storage: Proper storage is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your garden tools. Keep them in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent rust and deterioration.

Tool Organization: Having a designated storage space or tool rack helps keep your tools organized and easily accessible. This also reduces the risk of damage from being piled up or stepped on.

Regular Inspections: Take the time to inspect your tools for any signs of wear, loose parts, or damage. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage or accidents.

Pruning Tool Maintenance: For pruning tools like loppers and pruning shears, disinfect the blades with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water to prevent the spread of diseases between plants.

Wooden Tool Care: If you have wooden-handled tools, periodically sand them down and apply linseed oil to keep the wood moisturized and prevent cracking.

Rust Removal: If you notice any rust on your tools, use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove it. Apply a rust inhibitor or primer to prevent further rusting.

Tool Sharpening: In addition to sharpening blades, you may need to sharpen other tools like shovels and hoes. Use a file or grinder to restore their cutting edges.

Wheelbarrow Maintenance: Check the tires and handles of your wheelbarrow regularly. Inflate the tires if needed and tighten any loose bolts or screws.

Garden Hose Care: To ensure your garden hose lasts longer, drain it after each use and store it properly to prevent kinks and cracks.

Power Tool Maintenance: If you have power tools, follow the instructions on the manual.
