Environmental, public health: Bauchi bans processing Sallah sacrifice with burning tyres

By Abdullahi  Lukman

The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has prohibited the use of tyres for burning animal hides and skins during the Eid-el-Adha celebrations to protect public health and the environment.

The announcement was made by BASEPA Director-General, Dr. Mahmud Bose, on June 4, 2025, in Bauchi.

Dr. Bose warned that burning hides with tyres releases toxic chemicals such as dioxin and furan, which pose serious respiratory and ecological risks.

He described the practice as hazardous and pledged the agency’s commitment to safeguard lives and environmental integrity.

The ban is part of a wider campaign to promote sustainable environmental habits during cultural and religious festivities.

BASEPA has engaged community leaders and deployed environmental health workers to educate residents on safer meat processing methods and proper waste disposal.

Dr. Bose urged the public to cooperate with the agency by adopting safer alternatives and maintaining cleanliness, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.

He also affirmed the agency’s resolve to enforce regulations and support awareness efforts throughout the festive period.
