Environmental Preservation: Taraba Governor Signs Executive Order to Suspend All Mining Activities

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has taken decisive action by signing an Executive Order to halt all mining activities in the state.

The governor emphasized that unregulated mining has caused significant environmental damage, including deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. These adverse effects have not only jeopardized agricultural activities but also posed a threat to the ecosystem.

Governor Kefas stressed the necessity of this action, as it addresses the dangers associated with mining, such as the exploitation of vulnerable communities, an increase in crime rates, social unrest, and
a negative impact on the state’s revenue generation.

He described illegal mining as a malignant force that has deeply affected the fabric of the state.

Law enforcement agencies have been empowered to take action against anyone found violating the order.

Governor Kefas expressed his deep concern for the consequences of unregulated mining and affirmed his duty as the governor to protect the well-being of the citizens and
safeguard the state’s precious resources.

While acknowledging the abundance of mineral wealth in the state, the governor emphasized that it should not come at the expense of the environment and the livelihoods of the people. The unregulated
extraction of minerals has caused severe damage to the ecosystems, including deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

Governor Kefas pointed out that the contamination of the state’s rivers has adversely affected the health of its people and agricultural activities. He highlighted the cancerous nature of illegal mining, which exploits vulnerable communities, contributes to increased crime rates and social unrest.

The governor acknowledged that the revenue meant for public welfare and infrastructure development has been diverted, leaving the people in dire need. Therefore, he signed the executive order to immediately suspend all illegal mining activities in Taraba State, emphasizing the
