Environmental pollution: CAMIC urges imposition of carbon tax in Nigeria

The Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC), has advocated for the imposition of a carbon tax as an urgent and effective measure towards addressing the escalating environmental pollution in Nigeria.
CAMIC made the call in a statement issued by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi.
The body posited that as the country grapples with worsening air quality, deforestation, and the devastating impacts of climate change, it is crucial to adopt policies that hold polluters accountable while promoting sustainable development.
It said: “This approach has been successfully implemented in several countries, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased investments in cleaner energy solutions.
“By adopting this measure, Nigeria can curb the harmful effects of industrial pollution, deforestation, and fossil fuel dependency, which continue to degrade our environment and threaten public health.”
The body said the carbon tax has become necessary as Nigeria ranks among the highest in air pollution-related deaths globally.
“A carbon tax will discourage excessive emissions from industries and encourage cleaner production methods,” the statement read.
CAMIC emphasised that funds generated from carbon tax can be invested in renewable energy, reforestation, and climate adaptation projects, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
The body urged the Nigerian government to take decisive action by introducing a comprehensive carbon tax policy that is fair, transparent, and effectively enforced.
“We also call on businesses, civil society, and the public to support this initiative as a necessary step towards a cleaner and healthier Nigeria.
“The time to act is now. The cost of inaction will only worsen the environmental and economic challenges facing our nation. Together, we can build a future where development goes hand in hand with sustainability,” the body stated.
