Environmental education subjects African schools should teach, NatureNews poll suggests

A recent poll conducted by NatureNews Africa across its social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, has revealed the environmental subjects that Africans believe schools should prioritize in their education programs.

According to the poll results, 34 percent of respondents identified renewable energy as the most important subject that schools should teach more about.

Renewable energy, which includes solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, has increasingly become a critical focus for Africa, as countries on the continent seek sustainable ways to meet growing energy demands while addressing climate change.

Following closely, 28 percent of respondents indicated that smart agriculture should be prioritized in schools.

Smart agriculture refers to the integration of technology, innovative farming techniques, and sustainable practices to improve productivity, conserve resources, and enhance food security.

Experts argue that equipping young people with knowledge in this area is vital for addressing the continent’s agricultural challenges and promoting long-term sustainability.

Wildlife conservation was the focus for 20 percent of those surveyed.

With Africa home to a wide array of unique species, wildlife conservation education is seen as crucial to protect biodiversity, combat poaching, and foster environmental stewardship among future generations.

Conservation programs in schools can help instill an appreciation for natural habitats and the importance of maintaining ecological balance.

Finally, 18 percent of participants emphasized the need for schools to teach more about WASH – water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Education in WASH can improve public health, prevent disease outbreaks, and encourage sustainable water management practices, which are particularly relevant in regions facing water scarcity and sanitation challenges.

The NatureNews Africa poll highlights a growing awareness among Africans of the environmental issues facing their communities.

It also reflects a strong desire for educational systems to equip students with practical knowledge and skills to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

By focusing on renewable energy, smart agriculture, wildlife conservation, and WASH, schools can play a key role in fostering a generation of environmentally conscious citizens capable of driving sustainable development across the continent.
