Enugu Govt Expands Water Supply, Combats Vandalism

By Faridat Salifu

Enugu State’s government is actively advancing its commitment to extend and replace water supply pipelines, particularly in areas lacking access to clean and safe drinking water.

During an inspection tour of ongoing water supply projects on Monday, Governor Peter Mbah emphasized the importance of residents taking ownership of these vital facilities and protecting them against vandalism and sabotage.

Governor Mbah sternly warned individuals intentionally vandalizing state assets, causing water leakage, and incurring substantial costs for the government to desist from such unlawful activities or face severe consequences.

In an exclusive interview, Governor Mbah’s representative, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, outlined various security measures being implemented to combat vandalism, including engaging project beneficiaries to guard against potential acts of vandalism and deploying law enforcement agents to apprehend those responsible.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by individuals seeking to undermine the government’s vision for providing accessible and affordable water, the governor’s representative stressed the importance of communities taking ownership of the water infrastructure.

This emphasizes the need for collective commitment to ensure the sustainability of these essential resources.

Enugu State has successfully met its target of making water available within 180 days, with extension work underway in areas such as Abakpa and Independence Layout.

The replacement of aging pipelines with modern and internationally accepted pipelines underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing water transportation and ensuring public health and safety.

Enugu State’s proactive approach to expanding water supply and combating vandalism sets a precedent for effective governance, focusing on delivering essential services to its citizens.

The ongoing efforts to improve water access reflect the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all residents while safeguarding critical infrastructure for future generations.
