Egypt Strengthens Green Energy Ties With Belgium, EU

By Abbas Nazil

Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, kicked off his visit to Brussels recently by promoting Egypt’s green energy strategy and strengthening ties with Belgian officials, EU institutions, and major companies.

Abdelatty met with Wim Dhont, offshore cable manager at the Belgian company Jan De Nul, to discuss renewable energy cooperation and grid connection projects, including the GREGY electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Greece.

He commended Jan De Nul’s contributions to Egyptian projects and welcomed the company’s interest in supporting Egypt’s growing renewable energy sector.

During the meeting, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s commitment to a green transition through its national green hydrogen strategy.

He outlined Egypt’s investment-friendly environment, emphasizing policies that empower the private sector and attract foreign direct investment.

The minister underscored the government’s readiness to support foreign companies like Jan De Nul and address any challenges they might face.

Abdelatty’s visit aims to deepen bilateral relations between Egypt and Belgium, while also strengthening cooperation with the European Union.

The trip aligns with Egypt’s broader efforts to bolster its strategic and comprehensive partnership with the EU.

While in Brussels, Abdelatty is set to meet senior Belgian officials, business executives, and members of the Egyptian community.

He will also hold discussions with top EU officials, including the President of the European Council and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to advance mutual interests.

The visit continues in Strasbourg, France, where Abdelatty will engage with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and leaders of key political groups and committees.

These meetings will focus on fostering EU-Egypt relations, particularly in energy and economic reforms, while addressing shared strategic priorities.

Egypt’s proactive approach to renewable energy cooperation and investment highlights its ambition to become a regional hub for green energy production and export.

The memorandum of understanding for exporting renewable energy from Egypt to Europe signals a step forward in this vision.

With its strategic location and competitive advantages, Egypt aims to position itself as a key player in global energy markets while enhancing economic ties with Europe.

By the conclusion of Abdelatty’s European tour, Egypt hopes to solidify partnerships that advance its green energy ambitions and further integrate its economy with European markets.
