Egypt, Germany Team Up to Create Tyre Recycling Plant in Cairo
By Faridat Salifu
In a strategic move to curtail the influx of imported tyres into Cairo and contribute to sustainable
waste management, the Egyptian government is set to establish a cutting-edge plant for recycling
used tyres.
This monumental endeavor took shape recently as the Arab Industrialization Organization (AIO)
inked a pivotal agreement with renowned German firms, Intec Rubber Powder and Recom Patent &
License.
The signing ceremony marked a historic moment at the Environment and Climate Investment Forum,
which kicked off on the same day in the New Administrative Capital (NAC), located to the east of
Cairo. The accord solidifies plans for the construction of a state-of-the-art car tyre recycling facility
within the bustling Egyptian capital.
Major General Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Chairman of the AIO, underscored the significance of this
industrial project, stating, "This initiative aligns with our vision to foster local investments,
positioning Egypt as a regional hub for car tyre and vehicle recycling, adhering to international
quality standards. Such a development holds the promise of bolstering foreign currency inflow and
fortifying the national economy." The AIO, established through collaborative efforts by Egypt, Saudi
Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar, envisions a prosperous and sustainable future
for Egypt through such initiatives.
Under the partnership, Intec Rubber Powder and Recom Patent & License will outfit the forthcoming
recycling facility with cutting-edge "advanced intelligent systems." In a testament to Egypt's
commitment to technological progress, local workers will be trained in the latest technologies,
aligning with the standards of the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by the transition to
intelligent and interconnected production systems.
Beyond promoting domestic investment and technological advancement, the recycling of used tyres
will significantly curtail the volume of tyre imports into Cairo. This initiative, in tandem with Egypt's
thriving automotive landscape, marks a pivotal shift towards sustainable waste management. Cairo,
nestled along the banks of the Nile, stands as Egypt's largest city and boasted an impressive 2.6
million registered vehicles by 2022, according to official statistics.
The collaboration between Germany and Egypt to establish a state-of-the-art tyre recycling plant in
Cairo exemplifies a commitment to environmental sustainability, economic growth, and
technological progress. It is poised to make a lasting impact on Cairo's environmental landscape and
contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Egyptian capital.
