Education Minister inaugurates governing council of Nigeria’s first Environment Varsity

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has officially inaugurated the governing council and principal officers of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma—Nigeria’s first specialized institution dedicated to environmental sciences.

The inauguration ceremony marked a major milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the country’s growing environmental challenges through research, innovation, and education.

Speaking at the event, Alausa described the university as a “centre of excellence” envisioned to lead in critical areas such as renewable energy, climate change adaptation, environmental sustainability, and disaster risk management.

“This university is not just an addition to our educational system—it is a strategic intervention aimed at producing research-driven solutions to both local and global environmental issues,” the minister said.

Approved by President Bola Tinubu in February 2025, the university is sited in Koroma, Rivers State—a location Alausa described as “symbolic and intentional,” due to its proximity to Nigeria’s natural resource base and environmental hotspots.

He charged the newly constituted governing council to uphold integrity, promote merit, and provide visionary leadership that will safeguard the university’s autonomy and drive its mission.

“Your role is foundational.

The success of this institution will define its long-term trajectory and contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large,” he told the council.

The minister also congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers, expressing confidence that their leadership would shape a legacy for future generations.

The establishment of the university signals a new chapter in Nigeria’s higher education landscape—one that places environmental resilience and sustainability at its core.
