By Abdullahi Lukman

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated 100 members of the Edo State Environmental Compliance Corps (EECC) to strengthen environmental protection and enforcement across the state.

The inauguration took place on Wednesday, in Benin City, where the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Emmanuel Okoebor, urged the corps members to carry out their duties with courage, integrity and professionalism.

Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, public health and responsible governance, stressing that a clean environment is both a social necessity and an economic imperative that supports productivity, investment and overall wellbeing.

He charged the officers to work closely with communities to promote environmental compliance and awareness, noting that their conduct should inspire respect, build public trust and encourage voluntary compliance with environmental regulations.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, said the 100 officers constitute the first batch of the EECC and were recruited through a transparent and credible process.

Adams disclosed that the personnel had undergone an intensive four-day training programme to prepare them for enforcing the Edo Environmental Waste Management and Pollution Law recently signed by the governor.

According to him, the law provides a comprehensive framework for protecting the environment and ecosystem, adding that its full implementation would result in a cleaner, healthier and greener Edo State.
