The Edo State Waste Management Board has carried out maintenance operations at the Otofure dumpsite in Oluku, Ovia North-East Local Government Area as part of efforts to improve environmental hygiene in the state.
The maintenance work, alongside a sanitation exercise at Okha Market in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, was disclosed in a statement on the state government’s Facebook page on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the exercise involved clearing waste at the Otofure disposal site and conducting a sanitation campaign within Okha Market and its surroundings.
During an inspection, the Managing Director of the board, Enehita Inegbenehi, raised concerns over the activities of iron scavengers at the dumpsite, noting that their actions contribute to environmental degradation.
He stressed the need for improved monitoring and increased public awareness on proper waste disposal practices.
At Okha Market, the board engaged traders on hygiene and proper refuse disposal, warning that poor waste management could attract rodents capable of contaminating food items and spreading diseases such as Lassa fever.
The board also carried out clean-up operations across the market and surrounding areas, including the removal of illegal refuse dumps.
It added that traders were encouraged to adopt daily waste bagging practices to sustain a cleaner environment.
The initiative aligns with the environmental agenda of Monday Okpebholo, aimed at promoting a cleaner, safer, and healthier Edo State.
