EDEN Seeks Stronger Environmental Laws in Edo

By Abdullahi Lukman
The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) has called for stronger environmental laws and policies in Edo State, partnering with the Edo State House of Assembly to align environmental regulations with global best practices.
During an advocacy visit to the House Committee on Environment, EDEN’s Executive Director, Chima Williams, emphasized the urgent need to update Nigeria’s environmental laws, stating that weak policies have contributed to widespread environmental degradation.
He stressed that environmental protection is a shared responsibility and urged lawmakers to enact policies addressing plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, harmful extractive practices, and pollution of water and air.
In response, Okogbe Donald, a member of the committee representing Akoko Edo Constituency II, acknowledged the environmental threat posed by polythene packaging and single-use plastics.
He revealed that the committee is drafting a bill to restrict their use and introduce a take-back policy aimed at gradually eliminating plastic waste in the state.
The committee chairman, Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene, representing Igueben Constituency, echoed the need for Edo State to adopt successful environmental policies from other nations.
He highlighted EDEN’s expertise in waste management and environmental sustainability, welcoming the organization’s contributions to the committee’s legislative efforts.
Eugene assured EDEN that the committee remains open to collaboration, recognizing the network’s role in shaping effective environmental policies.
Earlier, EDEN had also visited the Edo State Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health to strengthen environmental protection through strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.
