Earth Treasures: Syenite

By Chisom Ibemere
Syenite is a saturated, coarse grained igneous rock which consist of alkali feldspar and ferromagnesian minerals, accessory apatite and iron oxides. They are also considered as groups of plutonic igneous rocks which consist of alkali feldspar with minute quantities of Na-rich plagioclase.
The name “syenite” is derived from “Lapis Syenite” which is a decorative stone that have undergone querying since ancient times. Syenites are uncommon on rocks that associates with Mafic rock types, evolved magnetic products and rarer igneous rocks.
Syenites are formed as a result of fractional crystallization of a parent basaltic magma and the alkaline rich crystal rocks assimilation which produces compositions enriched in alkali-elements, decreasing the saturation in silica of the magma.
Syenite rocks can be used for so many purposes which may includes:
- In buildings for interior decoration, flooring homes and hotels. They can be used in building stone, paving stone, facing stone and office buildings.
- It serves as dimension stones in cement manufacturing, construction aggregate, landscaping and in manufacturing Dolomite and magnesium refractories.
- They are also used in artifacts, monuments, sculpture and small figurines
The deposits of Syenite mineral occurs in small quantity and can be found mainly in Ekiti State.
