By Chisom Ibemere

Redstone is also known as Red Jasper. It is a type of red-colour mineral found in various parts of Nigeria. It is a form of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its origins can be traced back to ancient times when it was prized for its healing and spiritual properties.

Redstone is characterized by its deep red colour, which results from the presence of iron minerals in the stone. It has a hardness of around 6.5-7 on the Mohs’ scale and a density of 2.5-2.9 g/cm³.

Redstone is primarily used as a gemstone and decorative material, and it is commonly crafted into jewellery, sculptures, and other decorative objects. It is also used in the manufacture of ceramics, as a pigment in paint, and as a component in building materials.

The global value of Redstone varies depending on its quality, rarity, and demand. As a gemstone, high-quality Redstone can command prices of several thousand dollars per carat on the international market.

Redstone is found in various locations throughout Nigeria, including in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti states. The largest known deposit of Redstone in Nigeria is located in Ijero-Ekiti, where it is mined and sold to local and international markets. Other notable deposits are found in Akure and Igbeti.

Redstone has been mentioned in many ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The Egyptians believed that Redstone could protect the dead and enhance their journey to the afterlife. The Greeks and Romans also believed that the stone had powerful healing properties and that it could increase its wearer’s strength.

Redstone has also been used in the construction of buildings and historical sites around the world. In ancient times, the stone was used to make arrowheads and other tools. Later, it was used to create intricate carvings and mosaics in buildings, churches, and other structures.

Today, Redstone is still highly valued as a gemstone and decorative material. It is often used in jewellery, sculptures, and other decorative objects. It is also used in the manufacture of ceramics, as a pigment in paint, and as a component in building materials.
