Earth Treasures: Amazonite

Amazonite is also called Amazon stone. It is one of the varieties of potassium feldspar which is known as the microcline. It is a green tectosilicate mineral. It has been in existence since 10th century BC.
Amazonite was known first as distinct mineral on the 18th century. Its name was gotten from the Amazon River in which the green stones were harvested and had been in existence over two thousand years. Its occurrence is limited to some places. It is part of the Triclinic crystal system.
Amazonite stone had been greatly treasured by the ancient Egyptians. They use it in producing beautiful Jewelry, ornamental materials and carve text into the stone. It is greatly valued for it’s healing power and beauty.
Amazonite stone may be referred to as Colorado Jade due to its resemblance with the mineral Jade. It is said to have physical powers and healing abilities.
It has association with success and luck and it encourages good fortune. It may be seen in some parts of Brazil, Colorado and Virginia in the United States, Australia and Madagascar.
Amazonite exhibits a bright green colour when polished and it is sometimes cut and used as a gemstone, but may be easily fractured. It has a Hardness of 6-6.5 and Medium to Dark, green to blue green colour. It is translucent to opaque with fine white streaks. It may be used to produce beads, cabochons and tumbled stones.
Amazonite isn’t as expensive as some gemstones like Jade.
