Earth Day: Ondo Condole World on Human Losses by Wildlife Attacks

By Abdullahi Lukman

Condolences to the families of victims of wildlife attacks worldwide formed the highpoint of this year’s Earth Day celebrations in Ondo State.

The Ondo State Goodwill Ambassador for Environment, Ms. Olayemi Olapeju, extended her condolences during a visit to Elegbeka Farm Settlement in Ose Local Government on Wednesday, as part of the celebration.

The ambassador also inaugurated the “No To Extinction Art For Environment” initiative as part of a week-long series of activities marking World Earth Day.

Reflecting on tragic human-wildlife conflicts, Olapeju recalled several high-profile incidents, including lion and elephant attacks in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, expressing heartfelt condolences to the families affected over the years.

She consequently noted, “Wildlife conservation impacts more than just animals; we cannot protect wildlife without protecting people living with wildlife.”

Olapeju emphasized that World Earth Day, traditionally observed on April 22, should be recognized daily due to its critical importance for the planet and humanity.

The 2025 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the transition to renewable energy and the need for a cleaner, safer environment for future generations.

She stressed that wildlife conservation is inseparable from protecting human lives, as the safety of both wildlife and communities living alongside them is interlinked.

In her bid to contribute to the community, Olapeju distributed renewable solar lights and stipends generated from the sale of wildlife-themed thorn carving sculptures to residents of Elegbeka.

She called on the government to provide more support for those affected by wildlife-related accidents and urged greater awareness of environmental protection.

One victim, James Muhammed, who lost an eye during a hunting accident in the forest, expressed gratitude to Olapeju for her support and for raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

He also appealed for further assistance from the government to alleviate the suffering of those affected by wildlife-related incidents.
