The Rotary Club of Jos Central has donated 200 tree seedlings to the Nigerian College of Accountancy (NCA) Kwall, in Plateau, to prevent desertification in the school and environs.
Mr Peter Ikoyi, President of the Club presented the tree seedlings to the collage on Friday in Kwall, Riyom Local Government Area of the state.
Ikoyi said that the gesture was part of the club’s intervention aimed at improving the ecosystem.
He added that given the contributions of the institution to the field of education, the club decided to donate the seedlings to curb signs of desertification, provide shade and beautify the school environment.
Ikoyi said: “We chose this school to do this project because as you can see, it looks like a desert.
“We decided to bring life back to this place, given its strategic contributions to the educational growth of the country.
“So, these trees we are planting, will bring life to this place, it will also create shade and beautify the environment.
“We intend to create a garden around the trees as they grow for people to sit and enjoy nature.and breath of fresh air.
“As we know, human beings need oxygen to survive and live healthy and trees produces oxygen,”
Receiving the seedlings, Dr kayode Fashua, the Director-General of the NCA thanked the club for the gesture.
He noted that the institution is located on a vast plot of empty land that required shade from environmental effects.
“The college is situated on 148 hectares of land, it’s actually a vast open land.
“This event of planting more than 200 trees is significant to us as it would go a long way to protect the land from environmental hazards.
“We believed that in no distant time, these trees would be fully grown to beautify the environment and provide the needed protection for the land,” Fashua said.
The D-G called on the public to emulate the Club by imbibing the culture of giving back to the society and making the lives of people better.
“If we can all think like Rotarians, we can use it to make the life of the next person better.
“If everyone will try to make life better for the next person, the challenges we have in our society will reduce” he said.
