The member representing Delta State’s Ika federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Anthony Elekeokwuri, has called on local governments in the state to form task forces to enforce the anti open grazing law.

Speaking at a one-day sensitization assembly for his constituency, the federal parliamentarian emphasised the importance of the anti open grazing law in controlling livestock breeding and safeguarding farms, crops, and people.

The law, according to Elekeokwuri, is a remedy for the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders.

At the assembly, Olisa Ifeajika, Delta State Governor’s Executive Assistant on Public Enlightenment, Projects, and Policies, underlined the necessity of cooperation between task groups from local governments and the State Livestock Management Committee in order to guarantee that offenders receive the proper punishments.

Effective execution of the law will lessen the frequent confrontations between farmers and herders, he said, emphasising its significance in doing so.

Also emphasizing thr need for enforcement, Monday Odigwe, the chairman of the Ika North East local government, and Glory Onyedagbor, the vice chairman of the Ika South local government complained of a rise in kidnappings, murders, and other crimes by armed herdsmen.

Market women, youth organisations, Miyetti Allah representatives, and other interested parties promised to assist the local governments s in implementing the anti-grazing law.
